This unit is designed for high school sophomores or any high school student who has not completed a Health II course. This learner group consists of high school aged students from the range of 15-18. The majority of them are sophomores in high school and either 15 or 16. The class is a high school core course so all students are required to take this class to graduate and every student will have to take this class.
Delivery approach and Instructional sequence
Instructional sequence and lesson plan are based on Gagne’s 9 events of instruction, and the learning model for this lesson is cognitivism.
Designed for a 70 Minute Class period.
Given a 3x5 Index card and a timer, students will present a 2-3-minute speech to the class on Health topic of their choice.
Summative assessment using rubric for health speech, can students communicate effectively meeting time frame.
Resources or materials needed
Speech Rubric (Appendix G), Visible Timer, Computer & Projector
Student may use 3x5 index Card
Step By step instructions
Step 1. Begin class by giving students 5 minutes to review their typed speech.
Step 2. Inform students they will be presenting their speech in random order. Select the first student to begin speech. Make sure timer is visible to the student at the back of the classroom.
Step 3. Sit in a location that helps you evaluate the speech. Grade the speech the student presents using the Speech Rubric. (Appendix G)
Step 4. When students are finished presenting their speech instruct them to turn in the typed portion of the speech with the rubric.
Step 5. Grade speeches and unit is complete.
Final Step Assessment
Use the Rubric from Appendix G to evaluate each speech that is presented. Select the appropriate score for each speech and return to student. Allow 1 redo if student would like to make corrections.
Lesson Plan #6 Title: Unit 1 Lesson 6
Performance Objective: Given a 3x5 Index card and a timer, students will present a 2-3-minute speech to the class on Health topic of their choice.
Resources or Materials Needed: Visible timer, Rubric.
Time: 70 Minutes
Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities: 5 minutes for students to practice and review.
Step 2: Content Presentation: Teacher will present a speech to the class to set example of expectations.
Step 3: Learner Participation: Students will present their own speech to the class.
Step 4: Assessment: Summative assessment using rubric, can students communicate effectively meeting time frame.
Step 5: Follow-Through Activities: Students who fail assignment will have 1 chance to give speech a second time.
Lesson Plan Summary: The instructional strategies used in this lesson come from Gagne’s nine events of instruction. I based the structure of what the students will be doing on each one of those components. The lesson plan fits cognitivism because they will be getting corrective feedback with the rubric and have the chance to practice and improve.
