This unit is designed for high school sophomores or any high school student who has not completed a Health II course. This learner group consists of high school aged students from the range of 15-18. The majority of them are sophomores in high school and either 15 or 16. The class is a high school core course so all students are required to take this class to graduate and every student will have to take this class.
Delivery approach and Instructional sequence
Instructional sequence and lesson plan are based on Gagne’s 9 events of instruction, and the learning model for this lesson is constructivism.
Designed for a 70 Minute Class period.
Given computers and a printer, students will write and print a 2-3-minute speech on a Health-related topic.
Summative 2-3-page typed speech on health-related topic.
Resources or materials needed
Speech Rubric & Computer lab computers Internet access. Access to www.visuwords.com
Step By step instructions
Step 1. When students enter classroom pass out the written speech Rubric (Appendix F)
Step 2. Step by step go over the expectations on the rubric, what is expected to get the highest score.
Step 3. Tell the students they need to find two words to add to the speech that will help convey their message. They will research these words using an online dictionary called Visuwords. https://visuwords.com/intermeshed
Step 4. Take students to the computer lab and let them work for the remainder of class. Walk around to help students with questions or concerns. Make sure students know the speech will be presented in front of the class the next time they meet.
Final Step Assessment
Use the Rubric from Appendix F to evaluate each speech that is turned in. Select the appropriate score for each typed speech and return to student. Allow 1 redo if student would like to make corrections.
Lesson Plan #5 Title: Unit 1 Lesson 5
Performance Objective: Given computers and a printer, students will write and print a 2-3 minute speech on a Health related topic.
Resources or Materials Needed: Speech rubric and Computer Lab. Visuwords dictionary
Time: 70 Minutes
Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities: ATB quiz.
Step 2: Content Presentation: To gain students attention I will present a really short speech as a non-example. Then will discuss the rubric and grading criteria.
Step 3: Learner Participation: Students will use Microsoft word in the computer lab and write and print their speech. They will use Visuwords to research two new words that will help convey their message in the speech.
Step 4: Assessment: Summative 2-3-page typed speech on health-related topic.
Step 5: Follow-Through Activities: Students will be presenting and giving this speech to the class the following day.
Lesson Plan Summary: The instructional strategies used in this lesson come from Gagne’s nine events of instruction. I based the structure of what the students will be doing on each one of those components. The Constructivism learning theory fits this learning objective best.
