Unit 1 Lesson 4

Instructional Goal
  •  After completing this lesson, the student will be able to create a paint product that shows different meaning for the same word.

Intended Audience
This unit is designed for high school sophomores or any high school student who has not completed a Health II course. This learner group consists of high school aged students from the range of 15-18. The majority of them are sophomores in high school and either 15 or 16. The class is a high school core course so all students are required to take this class to graduate and every student will have to take this class.

Delivery approach and Instructional sequence
Instructional sequence and lesson plan are based on Gagne’s 9 events of instruction, and the learning model for this lesson is constructivism.
Time
Designed for a 70 Minute Class period.
Objective
Given Chromebooks and the paint application, students will create 3 images containing 1 word. All three images will be different to showcase different meaning.

Assessment
Formative assessment, Can the students present 3 different images to convey a different message using Microsoft Paint.

Resources or materials needed
Chromebooks, Microsoft Paint, Unit 1 Lesson 1 Review 2, Computer & Projector

Step By step instructions
Step 1.  When students enter classroom have Unit 1 lesson 1 Review (Appendix E) up on the white board. Give students 5 Minutes to complete. Once complete Cold call on students to go over the quiz and check for understanding.
Step 2. Show how states got their shapes. 30 Minutes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8m-iC85F78Y
Step 4. Have students get out chrome books and get onto paint application.
Use the following prompt for instruction:
Using the paint application, create 3 different images containing the same word. Make the word have a different meaning using font color or other paint options or images. Inform students it will be shown in front of the class.
Example:
The word toys. I can make the background blue and have a truck or I can have a white background with the word and a boring font then I could make the word red with a background that’s black with images of saws & needles. All three images make the meaning of the word toys different.

Final Step Assessment

Students will show the three images to the class. Images must be school appropriate. Grade Pass/Fail. If three images are different but have the same word the student understands the concept. If less than 70% of students fail evaluate and reteach.

Lesson Plan #4 Title:  Unit 1 Lesson 4
Performance Objective: Given Chromebooks and the paint application, students will create 3 images containing 1 word. All three images will be different to showcase different meaning.
Resources or Materials Needed: U1 L1 Review 2 Quiz. How states got their shapes episode 10 season 1.
Time: 70 Minutes
Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities: Students will answer a 10 question quiz the first 5 minutes of class about previous lesson. Discuss answers with cold call.
Step 2: Content Presentation: To gain students attention I will be showing a 10-minute clip of How states got their shapes. This shows how words can mean different things in the context. I will finish the lesson with a PowerPoint on Intonation and Body language and cultural differences.
Step 3: Learner Participation: Students will use Chromebook to create 3 images expressing how color and font can change the meaning of a word. Examples will be given.
Step 4: Assessment: Formative assessment, Can the students present 3 different images to convey a different message using Microsoft Paint.
Step 5: Follow-Through Activities: Students will be practicing these skills the following day by completing an ATB quiz and completing and writing their speech.
Lesson Plan Summary: The instructional strategies used in this lesson come from Gagne’s nine events of instruction. I based the structure of what the students will be doing on each one of those components. The Constructivism learning theory fits this learning objective best. This task allows the students a lot of freedom to explore the concept without having predetermined content objectives because it has artistic freedom.
